Прозрачное флоат-стекло
What Is Clear Float Glass?
As one type of flat glass, we can also call it standard clear float glass, which is the most common glass that we see in our daily life. It is well known for its high price-performance ratio in the glass industry and therefore is widely used in modern commercial and residential decoration. From the exterior of buildings to the interior, we can see the products of clear float glass everywhere.
Clear glass is mainly used as a base glass for architectural, interior, or other special glass processing. By applying a низкоэмиссионное покрытие on the surface, clear float glass is usually used for window panes. Besides, glass doors have become the first choice for commercial buildings. Among other glass products, clear float glass also plays a very important role, such as mirrors, shower enclosures, cabinet doors, and so on.
Мы, Shottglass, можем предложить полный ассортимент размеров прозрачного флоат-стекла, включая стандартные и индивидуальные размеры. Толщина флоат-стекла варьируется от 1,3 мм до 19 мм. Clear Float Glass Vs Tempered Glass
At Shottglass, we engineer both clear float glass (the pristine "base canvas") and закаленное стекло по индивидуальному заказу (a high-performance derivative). Understanding their distinct properties ensures optimal safety, functionality, and aesthetics for your project.
1. Core Identity & Manufacturing
Clear Float Glass:
The starting point for almost all architectural glass. Made by floating molten glass on tin, then annealing it slowly. Result: optically clear, smooth, but untreated surfaces. Shottglass float glass offers exceptional clarity (∼87% light transmission) and uniformity.
Tempered Glass:
Processed from float glass. Shottglass heats it beyond 600°C, then rapidly cools ("quenches") it. This creates intense surface/edge compression and core tension – a "temper."
2. Strength & Breakage Behavior (THE Critical Difference)
Float Glass:
Strong under uniform loads but vulnerable to impact, especially at edges/corners.
Breaks Into: Large, sharp, dangerous shards (like typical window glass).
Tempered Glass:
4- 5x stronger than float glass against impact and bending.
Breaks Into: Small, dull, cube-like pieces (safety glass standard - reduces cutting risk).
Note: Edges are its weak point – impact there can trigger full breakage.
3. Heat Resistance
Float Glass:
Vulnerable to thermal shock (sudden temperature changes cause cracking).
Tempered Glass:
Highly heat-resistant due to the tempering process. Essential for oven doors, fireplace screens, and facades facing intense sun.
4. Workability & Modifications
Float Glass:
Can be cut, drilled, or edged after manufacturing. Ideal for projects requiring custom onsite fabrication.
Tempered Glass:
MUST be cut/drilled/finished before tempering. Any post-tempering modification causes instant shattering. Plan dimensions meticulously!
What Is Clear Float Glass Used For?
Clear float glass is one of the most versatile and commonly used materials in modern architecture and manufacturing. Known for its clarity, smooth surface, and uniform thickness, clear float glass is produced by floating molten glass on a bed of molten metal, typically tin. This unique process ensures that both sides of the glass are perfectly flat and parallel, making it ideal for a wide range of applications.
In the construction industry, clear float glass is frequently used in windows, doors, and facades. Its transparency allows for maximum natural light penetration while still providing a strong and stable barrier against the elements. It can also be laminated or tempered to enhance its safety and durability. Because of its optical clarity, clear float glass is also the base material for more advanced glazing products, including energy-efficient coated glass and soundproofing glass systems.
Beyond buildings, clear float glass finds its place in interior design, such as in shower enclosures, partitions, mirrors, and furniture tops. It provides a clean and contemporary appearance that complements both residential and commercial spaces. Additionally, clear float glass is widely used in the production of solar panels, automotive glass, display screens, and even picture frames.
Its adaptability doesn’t end there. Clear float glass can be cut, polished, drilled, and treated to meet specific requirements, making it an essential component in customized glass solutions. Whether in large-scale infrastructure projects or everyday household items, clear float glass plays a vital role in shaping modern environments with its combination of aesthetic appeal and practical performance.
