The Science of Laminated Glass

As a pioneer in advanced glass solutions, Shott Glass has perfected the art of manufacturing premium laminated glass that combines safety, durability, and aesthetic appeal. Our tempered laminated glass undergoes a rigorous production process to meet the highest international standards.

The Science of Laminated Glass

The Precision Laminated Glass Manufacturing Process

At our state-of-the-art facilities, we transform raw materials into exceptional laminated glass through a meticulously controlled process:

  • Glass Selection & Preparation: We begin with high-quality float glass that's carefully cleaned and inspected. For applications requiring extra strength like laminated glass railing, we uselaminated glass that undergoes thermal toughening before lamination. Our optical inspection systems detect even micron-level imperfections to ensure flawless raw materials.
  • Inter layer Customization:The heart of our laminated safety glass lies in the advanced polyvinyl brutality (PVB) or ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) inter layers. We offer various thicknesses from 0.38mm to 2.28mm, with options for colored, acoustic, or UV-blocking inter layers to meet specific project requirements for laminated glass windows and other applications.
  • Autoclave Bonding: The assembled "sandwich" undergoes high-pressure autoclave at precisely controlled temperatures (140-150°C) and pressures (12-15 bar). This 2-4 hour process creates molecular bonds between glass and Inter layer, giving our laminated glassits legendary durability and clarity.

Advanced Applications of Laminated Glass

Shott Glass engineers laminated safety glass solutions for diverse architectural and design challenges:

  • Impact-Resistant Windows: Our laminated glass windowsprovide superior protection against extreme weather, forced entry, and accidental impacts. The Inter layer holds broken glass fragments together, preventing dangerous shattering while maintaining the window's structural integrity during and after impact.
  • Safety Railings & Barriers: For laminated glass railingsystems, we use thicker inter layers (1.52mm+) and often combine with tempered glass for added strength. These railings meet strict building codes for load-bearing capacity while offering unobstructed views - perfect for balconies, staircases, and pool enclosures.
  • Security Glazing: Banks, museums, and government facilities rely on our multi-layered laminated safety glassthat can withstand ballistic threats and explosive forces without compromising optical clarity. Our security-grade laminates incorporate polycarbonate layers for maximum protection.
  •

Quality Assurance & Testing Protocols of Laminated Glass

Every batch of Shott Glass laminated glass undergoes exhaustive testing to guarantee performance:

  • Impact Testing:We subject samples to pendulum tests (EN 12600) and projectile impacts (ASTM E1886) to verify the laminated safety glass meets required safety classifications. Our tempered laminated glass consistently exceeds standard impact resistance requirements.
  • Environmental Durability: Accelerated weathering tests simulate decades of UV exposure, temperature cycling (-40°C to +80°C), and humidity (95% RH) to ensure long-term performance of our laminated glass windowsand other products.
  • Optical Quality Control: Advanced spectrometers measure light transmission, haze levels, and color consistency to maintain perfect clarity in all our laminated glassproducts, whether for windows, railings, or decorative applications.

Laminated Glass FAQs

How does laminated glass differ from tempered glass?

While both are safety glasses, laminated glass bonds layers with a plastic Inter layer that holds broken pieces together, whereas tempered glass shatters into small, dull pieces. Our tempered laminated glass combines both technologies for maximum safety - the tempering provides strength while the lamination prevents fallout upon breakage.

What maintenance does laminated glass railing require?

Shott Glass laminated glass railing systems are virtually maintenance-free. Regular cleaning with mild, non-abrasive cleaners maintains appearance. Avoid ammonia-based products and sharp impacts to edges. Our inter layers resist yellowing and maintain clarity for decades with minimal care.

Can Shott Glass laminated glass windows reduce noise?

Yes, our acoustic-grade laminated glass windows use special sound-dampening inter layers that can reduce noise transmission by up to 50% compared to standard glass. The STC (Sound Transmission Class) ratings range from 35 to 45 depending on configuration - ideal for urban environments or noisy areas.

Is Shott Galss colored laminated glass as strong as clear versions?

Absolutely. The coloring pigments in our laminated glass are integrated into the Inter layer without affecting structural performance. Whether clear, tinted, or patterned, all our laminated safety glass meets the same rigorous strength and durability standards. This means that colored laminated glass offers the same level of protection against impact, shattering, and forced entry as clear laminated glass. Additionally, the colored Inter layer can provide enhanced privacy and aesthetic appeal, making it a versatile choice for various applications such as residential, commercial, and automotive use.

How long does the laminated glass manufacturing process take?

From glass cutting to final inspection, standard Shott Glass laminated glass production takes 3-5 business days. Custom projects like curved laminated glass railing or oversized panels may require 7-10 days. Our automated lines ensure efficient production without compromising quality. We focus on offering one-stop solutions on glass processing for global OEM/ODM customers. In order to make precision processing glass, we have equipped with 45m-long tempering furnace, Inter mac CNC work center, Inter mac cutting table, Double edge grinding machine, jerkwater, PVB and EVA laminating lines. We also have an acid etching line, two silkscreen-printing lines, and 2 mirror lines to meet all-round needs of customers.
